Oakland 39th round high school flyer unlikely to sign

Posted in June 11th, 2008
by Oz in 2008, Baseball News, Draft, Newswire, Oakland Athletics

Denny Clement apparently got calls from four different teams on draft day. The first three, at rounds 7, 8 and 13, were answered with the words "I’m going to play baseball at Texas A&M."

But the A’s didn’t call first. They just drafted. And now the negotiations begin.
There’s only one way Denny Clement signs a contract [...]

Posted in June 10th, 2008
by Oz in 2008, Around The Minors, Baseball News, Draft, Newswire, Oakland Athletics, Vancouver Canadians

The A’s aren’t waiting around to get their contract signing taken care of; ten players have dropped their John Hancock’s on a contract thus far, and more pour in every day.

Posted in June 5th, 2008
by Oz in 2008, Baseball News, Draft, Newswire, Oakland Athletics

No, not that Beckham.
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays get the first pick (shocker!) and they’ll be grabbing mega-tool Georgia high school shortstop, Tim Beckham.
Here’s the list so far:
1. Tampa Bay Devil Rays - Tim Beckham SS (can’t miss mega-tool stud)2. Pittsburgh Pirates - Pedro Alvarez 3B (crazy hitter)3. Kansas City Royals - [...]

Navy kid gets to live out a baseball dream

Posted in February 21st, 2008
by Jeremy in 2008, Around The Minors, Baseball News, Draft, Newswire, Oakland Athletics

In the 2007 MLB Draft, the Oakland A’s made a questionable draftee choice, drafting Jonathan Johnston, a Catcher out of Navy (well, sort of).
Here is what Oz wrote about the former Patriot League standout last June:
When you see the words ‘no school’ listed after a draft pick’s name, it really does spark your interest. What [...]

Oakland’s rebuild: Will it mean bigger, better Vancouver Canadians?

Posted in January 22nd, 2008
by Oz in 2008, Around The Minors, Baseball News, Draft, Newswire, Oakland Athletics, Vancouver Canadians

From Sports Illustrated:
What are all of Oakland’s dollar-conscious disciples to think of the A’s this year? What’s anyone to think? The franchise that made the modern blueprint for winning on a budget has spent the winter trading away what few marquee players it had and stocking up on unproven, untested, largely unknown kids. That is [...]
