Some scouts thought Max Stassi, a senior out of Yuba City High School in California would be Oakland’s third round pick last night, but Justin Marks took that award. Stassi ended up falling a round, but still went to the A’s.
He was predicted to go in the Top 2 rounds, and has a commitment to UCLA, so if the A’s price isn’t right, he can go to College and play in the Pac-10.
He had a shoulder injury earlier this year, but is apparently healthy once again. The one knock is that he might not be able to stay a catcher, so he can play middle infield, if necessary.
Stassi was hitting .593 after 21 games this year, where he knocked 9 HR’s over that time frame.
Obviously this is Oakland’s first steal of the draft, and Stassi should produce well in the system if he signs.
He’s from the Sacramento area, was the Sacramento Bee Player of the Year last season (with a nomination for tomorrow’s award for 2009), and as a Junior last year hit .471 with 15 Hr and 45 RBI.
Stassi could make a huge impact, should he sign.
