n864920466_715695_43.jpgCanadians FM:

Just one year after you could first listen to Canadians games on the concourse, you can now bring an FM radio, and listen to them from the comfort of your seat, to the tune of Rob Fai, and on occasion Chris Pritchett (when it is a Team 1040 game).  All home games can be heard on 98.5 FM (local) if you’re at Nat Bailey, or in the very close area.

The first game you can try out C’s FM is on June 20th, Opening Night, when Fai and Pritchett will host a 30-minute pre-game show to kick off the season, before the Boys of Summer take the night away.

Blood:

The Canadians have obviously brought up their community service in the past two years, but on Saturday at ‘Vancouver Canadians Day’ at the nearby Oak Street blood donor clinic, the C’s managed to collect 80 units of blood, and can now impact as many as 250 lives due to said donation.

From their website:

Kathy Broad-Scott, Regional Partnership Specialist for the B.C. & Yukon Region, hopes the success of this day will set a precedent for other community groups to follow the Canadians’ lead in giving back.

"The Vancouver Canadians really made a difference by partnering with us on one of the toughest weekends of the year," notes Broad-Scott. "This is such a great example of the impact that local organizations can have in their own communities. Thank you to the Canadians’ staff, mascot, and fans for coming out to donate and supporting blood donation in Vancouver."

Congrats to the Canadians for setting such a wonderful example.

Wild Bear:

cecil_fielder.jpgAs part two of the C’s superstar series, Cecil Fielder, or Wild Bear as he was known while playing in Japan, will visit ‘The Nat’ on July 27th, on the first Superstar night, as your Vancouver Canadians host the Spokane Indians.

After smoking 319 Big League homers, and driving in 1008 RBI, Fielder also managed 1313 hits, over a 13-year MLB career.  He even played in Japan for a season, where he had 38 homers in just 106 games.  His career highlight had to be the 1990-91 seasons, where he hit 51 dingers in ‘90, followed by driving in 133 runs the following season (these were the first two years since he played in Japan).

The ex-Blue Jay spent parts of four seasons in Canada, and played for a total of 5 MLB clubs, including Anaheim and Cleveland in his final year.  Cecil will always be remembered for his years in Detroit, which spanned 6.5 seasons, and was even on the same Angels team as was C’s colour man Chris Pritchett.  Pritchett was essentially called up to The Bigs after Fielder was traded.

His son Prince is a 1B for Milwaukee, although they do not speak to each other.

I can’t wait til the 27th: Two months, 7 days.

Roster Moves:

Ex-Canadians were on the move Tuesday, even after former NWL MVP Javier Herrera was released.  2008 southpaw Ben Hornbeck was promoted to Stockton, after sparkling with Kane County.  Hornbeck was 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA in Kane County, and never threw under 3.2 innings, despite being a reliever in three of his seven games.

Hornbeck opened the season with a no-hitter on April 15th, only to have Scott Deal (bottom left) give up a hit in relief, and then the next game, against the same team, Ben went five strong allowing just one hit and one walk, his first of the season.  He struck out 13 batters in his first 10 innings with one walk and one hit.  He has continued to sizzle, allowing just five earned runs since.

deal-scott2.jpgAnother ‘08 lefty Carlos Hernandez is on the move, up to AA Midland, from Stockton.  After 8 starts, he was 2-4 with a 5.31 ERA in the hitters league, but has rebounded his last two starts, including a no-hitter through 6 on May 12th, where he struck out 8, and he gave up three runs on the 17th through 6 innings.

Carlos spent parts of two years in Vancouver, but turned it around last year, and was considered the best turnaround in the system.
