Don’t you hate those days when you go to a ballgame, all excited that your team is going to do really well, and then they get beat up by their opponents early in the game so you have to sit there for nine innings thinking ‘well, hopefully I’ll see a homerun… or someone has a fight… or something.’

That didn’t happen at The Nat on Wednesday.

From my write-up at The Sun:

Sparked by five runs in the first two innings, including a grand slam by left fielder JD Pruitt in the 2nd, the C’s rode five innings of strong pitching from starter Pedro Figueroa (5IP, 1ER, 4K) before their shaky middle relievers let the Indians back into the contest.

When Ken Smalley let in a run and put two men in scoring position in the 8th without registering more than a single out, the Canadians had to bring in closer Jose ‘Goose’ Guzman early to escape the jam. Alas, the usually trusty right-hander couldn’t keep the runners from scoring, blowing the save and leaving the scores at 6-6 going into the 9th.

Both teams duly went toe-to-toe until the 11th inning when David Thomas led off with a single, before a defensive error and a Jason Christian walk loaded the bags with one out on the board. With the remaining crowd on its feet, hometown hero Jeremy Barfield singled to right to take the game for the Vancouver Canadians, 7-6.

Fabian Gomez got the win with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

And, of course, he picked someone off at first. Because Fabian Gomez has the best pickoff move in the minors.

One other thing… see the box score below? See the Spokane logo on the left? Now compare it to ours on the right.

And that, my friends, is why I’m no fan of our logo. It’s just so freaking blah.
