rivera-magnante.jpgAfter Notes From the Nat explained the minor league rosters yesterday, another minor league list came out, and it’s not a good one.  The dreaded ‘Extended Spring Training’ roster came out Monday, and there are many ex-Canadians who will be staying at Papago Park until a spot opens up for them with one of the short-season clubs, or a full-season team who needs an extra player or two.

From the 2007 Canadians, there are just shy of 20 players still in Phoenix, including all three C’s catchers.

Keep in mind, many of the players on this list who have played at a higher level (i.e. Kevin Melillo) are probably rehabbing injuries, while other guys such as Francisco Tirado and Raymond Rodriguez are almost shoe-ins to be Vancouver Canadians in June.

Here is the list:

The injuries have piled up over the course of the last month, with 2004 NWL MVP Javier Herrera, 2007 OF Grant Desme, 2005-2006 1B/OF Chad Boyd and RP Mike Mitchell and Jason Windsor all battling injuries.

That doesn’t include the guys who haven’t even reported to Phoenix, such as ‘Amblin’ Dan Hamblin and Steve ‘Squeaky’ Kleen.  Kleen is recovering from an undisclosed off-season surgery, and Hamblin suffered an off-season injury.

The Sacramento Rivercats, Midland Rockhounds, Stockton Ports and Kane County Cougars all open their season this Thursday.  Kane County has announced their Opening Day starter, and it’s three-time Cougar Craig Italiano, who returns to baseball after getting hit in the head with a line-drive last season.  Good luck to the ‘Cougs.
