2007 was a great year for Vancouver Canadians fans. New owners, renovated stadium, new ballpark food, the list goes on and on.
But don’t get it in your head that those changes were the only ones on the table. 2007 should be considered the "baby steps" season compared to what 2008 has in store.
So far, there’s been a new logo, new uniforms will be released shortly, and there’ll also be a mascot for youngsters (and slightly deranged older people).
So what’s still on the horizon?
The one we’ve been all over since it was announced in January is the fact that all 38 home games will be available on a live internet video feed. Stuck at the office on a summer night? Forced to be in a meeting when the C’s are playing a crucial Nooner? The video feed will be your new best friend.
Most people know the story of Matt Baker and Rob ‘Beerhawker’ McGowan, spending the 2005 season broadcasting the Canadians games for the webcast audience. If I remember correctly, they didn’t get paid much (if at all), and Matt returned in 2006 before heading to an internship at TSN. In 2007, it was Brent Mutis, a former UBC Thunderbird pitcher, who traveled all season long with the C’s, with the exception of Media Relations Manager Rob Fai who called almost half of the 76 games at home.
This year, it’ll be Fai, the former Shaw TV colour guy for the Canadians, who will broadcast all 76 games, home and away. This is a HUGE step forward for Vancouver. To put it into perspective, when you think Canucks hockey you think John Shorthouse. BC Lions? Rick Ball. And if you were a casual Canadians fan, you’d be going, "Matt Baker? No, wait is it Brent Mutis? What about the Beerhawker guy? Who the hell is Rob Fai?" After this season, you think Canadians, you’ll think Rob Fai.
Rumours have it that all 76 games will have a post-game report on the Team 1040 (who will broadcast a significant number of games this season once again), but here is the best part of the package. Starting June 1st, and ending October 1st (both Sundays), Rob Fai will host The C’s This Week, a 60-minute weekly show on the Team 1040, recapping the week the C’s had, and what the next week will look like.
Fai can’t wait for this to air, and neither can I. Think Jays Connected on Sportsnet, or Canucks this Week, but better.
Opening Day is only 4 months away, and Season Tickets are available. Buy your tickets now!
