On occasion, we like to post a general wrap-up of questions and answers sent in by readers, along with interesting news bits that we’ve found floating around the web. This usually happens when, frankly, I’m bored.
Today, I’m bored like a beetle-infested pine tree.
"Hello, I live in Prince George, and I have been looking for some game worn Vancouver jersey from the 1995-1999 seasons, any information on how I can find them? Thanks, Winston.
Gotta say, I have no idea. I don’t think the C’s have any of the old Triple A shirts in stock, but you occasionally see them sold on eBay.
Frankly, I think it’d be a great idea for the C’s to not only have some old school Canadians shirts manufactured for sale to fans, but also some old Mounties and Capilanos jerseys.
In fact, if they did that, they could have a ‘Retro Day’, during which the team would play in the old shirts, which could then be auctioned off for charity. I’d TOTALLY grab one of those bad boys, if they existed.
So, sorry Winston, wish I could be of more help, but if anyone is looking to sell a second hand old school Vancouver ball shirt, drop us a note at the blog.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The beerhawkers, who always know such things, tell me that the old Canadians jerseys went with the old Canadians team to Sacramento. Two hawkers managed to souvenir a shirt each - game worn, no less - so they may be open to offers, but otherwise your best bet is either eBay or contact the Sacramento Rivercats directly.
There’s more…
"I just want to thank you guys for keeping up this great site. It’s fantastic to be able to keep up on my favorite team when they’re on the road. I see you got some shots of the boys in Yakima. Have any good ones of Doogie? I see he just pitched 3 on Sunday, poor broken wing. If so, I would love to see them. Cheers, Elisha."
This note came in while I was on the other side of the world, so it’s not time-relevant at the moment, but I’m glad to see the Doogie Heuser nickname catching on. Thanks for the props, Elisha.
"Hey, what’s the chance that maybe one day the Canadians will get a scoreboard that wouldn’t be an embarassment to a college team? Love the blog. G."
Ouch. We’ve actually heard rumors that there might be a video component to the Nat Bailey Stadium scoreboard sooner rather than later. The new owner of the team apparently wants to really upgrade that side of things, especially after seeing the operation at Kane County.
And on a side note, according to Sports Illustrated, the new scoreboard at Texas University is 144 feet across, making it the biggest electronic scoreboard in North America. So maybe college scoreboards aren’t the best comparison…
"What’s Larry cobb doing in Triple A ball? Didn’t Oakland have anyone better to send up in five levels of ball? Honestly, he’s a good player, but Triple A? That’s insane. -Rocky"
Former Vancouver Canadians lead-off man, Larry Cobb, went 0-3 for the Sacramento River-Cats last night, maintaining his .000 batting average at that level, but anyone who thinks that’s a insane is missing the point.
Oakland is out of playoff contention with Sacramento, but AA Midland is right in the thick of the post-season, so they don’t want to mess with that roster at all.
In High-A Stockton, ditto, and Low-A Kane County is wildcarding it in the Midwest League. So who are you going to take to replace the AAA guys being sent to Oakland for September call-ups?
That’s right, the short-season lads, and few C’s players have been playing better, and as consistently, as Larry Cobb of late.
Old Gerry in the press box insists Wilber Perez is his player of the year for the C’s, so that explains his promotion, and rather than say there were better qualified people to go, I’m going to say that it’s a great thing Oakland has done to expose these two kids to a near-major league level of ball. If Cobb goes 0-15 for Sacramento, that’s fine - he’s learning, and he’ll be better for it next season.
And now, on to the news blurbs:
EVERETT HERALD - The Everett AquaSox celebrated their final home game with Fan Appreciation Day at Everett Memorial Stadium Sunday. Unfortunately for the AquaSox and their fans it was the Frogs’ opponent, the Vancouver Canadians, that provided all the fireworks for the 3,652 fans in attendance.
Vancouver lit up the AquaSox for 20 runs - 13 coming via the long ball - and the Canadians defeated the AquaSox in a football-like score of 20-7. For the second straight game the Canadians hit at least five home runs. However, unlike Saturday’s game when all five were solo shots, the Canadians hit six home runs and most of Sunday’s long balls came with the bases occupied.
"We centered a lot of fastballs and they hit most of them out of the park," AquaSox manager Dave Myers said.
That last quote is just poetry. It should be printed in big block letters and nailed to the outer wall of Nat Bailey Stadium whenever the Sox come to town.
We found this next one amusing - it’s funny how small towns take any excuse to claim people as their own…
BANGOR DAILY NEWS: Oakes takes root with A’s.
He was born in Bristol, Conn., educated in Pleasantville, N.Y., and drafted to play professional baseball in Vancouver, British Columbia, but Earl Oakes’ roots extend all the way to Maine. The 24th-round pick (728th player taken overall) by the Oakland A’s in June’s Major League Baseball amateur draft is settling into minor league baseball life as a relief pitcher for the Vancouver Canadians, the short-season, Single-A affiliate of the A’s.
Oakes is the grandson of Hazel and the late Earl Oakes of St. John, and Jeannette and the late Gerard Martin of St. Francis.
Awesome.
The Boise Hawks won the NWL East division last night, sending them to a final with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, who wrapped up the division in about February.
In other news, the Volcanoes were one-hit by the Eugene Emeralds last night. It won’t change the standings any, we just like to point out those rare times when the Lava Men blow chunks.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we’re rooting for Boise in the playoffs. NWL West pride!
