Because I am unable to provide recounts of the games from Oregon, Ihave enlisted, once again, the services of trusty Vancouver Canadians webcaster, Matt Baker,
to provide me with his post-game synopses.
As he is the one on the road with the team, he is expertly placed to
provide such a review. I trust you will accept his judgement of the
games you have heard him broadcast. Please enjoy.
Hello all blog fans and greetings from the Valley River Inn business center.
Your Vancouver Canadians
are off to a great start on this six-game Oregon tour that has nowhere
near the implications it did a few weeks ago, with Salem-Keizer all but
assurred the division crown. The boys are playing for pride and are
doing so in great fashion. In the opener at Eugene on Tuesday, Inoel Deaza pitched a gem: 7
scoreless innings of two hit ball, picking up his 5th win of the year.
5 C’s had mulitple hit games and only Hernandez and Rosendo went
hitless in the 7-0 win.Last night’s contest was an eventful affair. The C’s won 10-5 with
Scott Deal picking up his long awaited 7th win of the year. It was his
first win in 7 starts. The top of the 4th featured many fireworks aside
from the C’s putting 4 runs across and sending 9 men to the plate.
There were 2 ejections: Eugene starter Matt Buschman and Manager Doug
Dascenzo were both treated to an early shower. After Mendez hit a
two-run homer to give the C’s a 6-1 lead, Buschman was ejected for
throwing at Gustavo Rosendo’s head on the next pitch.Dascenzo then went ballistic (rightfully) after his relief pitcher Jon
Kirby wasn’t allowed as many warmup pitches as he wanted since he was
coming in on an emergency basis. Umpire Ben Robinson only allowed Kirby
8 warmup pitches. Professional baseball rules state if a pitcher comes
in after an ejection or injury, he is allowed as much time possible to
warmup. Emeralds President Bob Beban then came running onto the field
with a cell phone. The most likely candidate who was wanting to talk to
Robinson was league president Bob Richmond. Ben would have none of
that. After the 15 minute delay, the game resumed. Eugene, seemingly
motivated by the 4th inning events, got back to within 2 runs after a
Craig Cooper homerun but that was as close as they would come. The C’s
went on to a 10-5 win, with Mendez hitting his second homer of the
game, a solo shot, in the top of the 8th.The C’s are alone in 2nd place and will look to complete the sweep
tonight. Mathematically, they are still in the race, and should have
enough momentum to make Salem earn their title. Pre-game is 6:50pm on
canadiansbaseball.com.
Note: Our boy Matt will return to Vancouver on August 29, and
will call his final game of the season August 30 - a nooner versus
Salem. After that, he’s off to "The Centre of the Universe" (aka
Toronto) to begin his stint as an intern at The Sports Network. (I’ll be calling the
last 6 games, plus playoffs.) Please send him an email to let him know
how much you’ve enjoyed his performance this summer. He’s enjoyed doing
it, and before he departs he’d appreciate your response. Thanks
